SCORM School 201 - Mastering the Basics

The Academic ADL Co-Lab staff facilitates a four-week long, web-based course that explores the fundamental skills needed to create SCORM-conformant content. Upon completion, course participants can expect to be able to assemble a basic SCORM 2004 3rd Edition-conformant content package using readily available tools and resources. The cost for this four-week online course is US$495 per participant.

Course Format and Duration

Each of the four weeks’ content contains a mix of self-paced content, asynchronous discussion with other participants, and opportunities to connect with the course facilitators. Most participants will spend two to four hours per week completing course content, depending on their previous experience. Any synchronous content will be recorded for later playback for those that are not able to attend.

Intended Audience and Required Skills

This course is intended for instructional designers and content developers. Participants should be able to edit HTML files, and have a solid understanding of how basic web content operates. Experience working with JavaScript is also very helpful. Participants should also have a high-level knowledge of what SCORM is and how it is used.

The ADL SCORM software tools are freely available from the ADL website links provided. Note that you will need to create a free adlnet.gov account to download the Conformance Test Suite and Sample Run-Time Environment. Also note that the ADL SCORM Sample Runtime Environment has additional set-up steps beyond the initial installation. Those steps are covered in the installation readme file.

Here is a weekly breakdown of the SCORM School content:

Week 1: Communications, Tracking and Testing

  • Exploration and hands-on use of the SCORM Conformance Test Suite
  • Exploration and hands-on experimentation with essential Communication and Tracking concepts

Week 2: Content Packaging

  • Exploration of essential Content Packaging concepts
  • Hands-on use of the Reload Editor for use in Content Packaging
  • Exploration of essential Metadata concepts

Week 3: Sequencing and Navigation

  • Exploration and hands-on use of the SCORM Sample Runtime Environment
  • Exploration of core essential Sequencing and Navigation concepts
  • Hands-on use of the Reload Editor for use elementary editing of Sequencing and Navigation

Week 4: Putting it All Together

  • Exploration and hands-on use of the Reload Editor LSAL Templates
  • Exploration and hands-on use of the libSCORM template
